Rifd Petrochemical Company has signed a long-term supply agreement with Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Company (SATORP).
The agreement covers the supply of “Ethylene” gas to Rifd Petrochemical’s plant, the primary feedstock for producing ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), which will be produced for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa region.
The plant will be built in Jubail Industrial City using advanced European technology and backed by over 25 years of experience in UHMWPE production and related downstream industries.
The new plant will be designed to produce UHMWPE with various grades to meet local and international market demands.
The Rifd Petrochemical plant is scheduled to begin production by mid-2028 with a capacity of up to 30,000 tons per year. UHMWPE is used in many advanced applications, including the manufacture of lithium-ion battery separators (LIBs) for electric vehicles and renewable energy, as well as in the military and personal defense industries, marine industries, and building materials.
UHMWPE, sometimes called a “super polymer,” is known for its high impact resistance, self-lubrication properties, and ability to be used to make ropes with higher strength and durability than steel, among other unique characteristics.
Rifd Petrochemical Company will ensure and confirm the plant’s sustainability and its significant contribution to a clean environment and renewable energy.
